There are more than twenty new features in Aperture 2 and they’re all designed to help you spend less time in front of a computer and more time behind your lens.

But in order to get out and shoot more, you need to understand how digital photography works as an integrated set of opportunities to make you shoot better by shooting smarter.

So if you’re ready to demystify digital photography and simplify your work with the power of Aperture, this class is for you. You’ll learn the ins-and-outs of color management, file organization, image selection, editing, output, archiving and more.

The Aperture Road Tour 2.0 is the first class in the country to teach the Aperture 2 workflow and the only one produced by the leading authority on Aperture, the Aperture Users Professional Network.

Aperture Road Tour Overview

Digital photography offers the promise of vastly increased creative control and reduced workloads, but what good is that promise if learning how to master your ever-growing collection of images instead leaves you bogged down behind your keyboard while deadlines loom and pressures mount?

Working with tens-of thousands or hundreds-of-thousands of images is a complex process, and it increasingly occupies a larger and larger part of most photographer's working lives.

The Aperture Road Tour will show you how to take control of your photographic world with Aperture—the photographic "post processing" tool from Apple—and how to efficiently use your images in photographic and multimedia ways that you never imagined.

The Aperture Road Tour will cover all of the aspects of digital imaging in one terrific full day. Sessions will include training on Aperture's key features as well as a complete and easy-to-follow explanation of color management, printing, output, archiving and more.

This is the perfect class for the photographer looking to get up to speed on their whole digital imaging life, using Aperture as the hub of their photographic workflow or for those who are familiar with digital shooting but want to find out how to use Aperture to streamline the process. It’s also perfect for the photographer looking to find out more about the power and possibility of Aperture 2.

For those looking for a hands-on master class in Aperture designed for the experienced photographer, please see our information on Aperture Intensive classes.

What Does It Cost?

The Aperture Road Tour is free to AUPN Pro members and is only $79 for non-members, an incredible deal for a full-day complete workflow class.

Who Should Attend?

These sessions are perfect for both the seasoned digital shooter—looking to get up to speed on the power and performance of Aperture—and the new digital photographer looking to get a better grasp on concepts like capturing in raw, color management, archiving and printing.

Professional photographers and serious enthusiasts alike will leave this class with a solid understanding of digital fundamentals and the steps needed to start using Aperture to improve productivity while enhancing creativity.

Current Aperture users will take their skills to the next level with Aperture 2, enabling them to work faster and smarter than ever while new users will discover the power of Aperture 2 and learn how to make your photographic life more streamlined than ever before.

As a one-day demonstration level class, this session is intended for those who are looking to get up to speed quickly on photographic workflow and on Aperture, especially those who want a good overview of the power and potential of Aperture 2.

Those looking for more intensive, classroom style  instruction in all aspects of working with Aperture 2 are encouraged to check out our Aperture Intensive classes.

What Will You Learn?

The Aperture Road Tour is a demonstration-style class that will provide a step-by-step guide to the complete digital process. We'll start with color management—perhaps the least understood facet of digital photography—in order to provide the steps needed to ensure accurate color across the entire workflow.

Importing and Image Management

In our session on raw files we'll separate fact from the fiction and explain in easy-to-understand terms why you’ll want to take advantage of a raw workflow, we’ll discuss the problems with the current state of raw and we’ll talk about the future of high-resolution images.

Next we'll discuss Aperture's powerful file management systems and you'll learn how to store you images anywhere and keep working on them.

Then we move onto importing, keywording and adding metadata. A few minutes spent properly adding information to your images can save you countless hours down the road, and you'll learn how to add tags and rate your images in the most efficient way possible.

Evaluating and Comparing

In our session on evaluating and comparing images we'll introduce you to Aperture 2’s new and streamlined interface, help you master the new Quick Preview mode, plus take control of the powerful and amazing Loupe, introduce the Full Screen and Light Table modes and delve into Stacks, talking about the best ways to cull through thousands of images to find the just ones that make the cut.

Image Editing

Even the best images need a little help, which is why Aperture includes a high-end set of editing tools. Aperture 2 adds a number of great new tools to the mix, including a full-fledged retouch and clone tool, as well as new color and vignetting tools.  We'll cover each and every one of Aperture's editing and adjustment functions and talk about the program's integration with Photoshop and other high-end image editing programs.

With the new tools in Aperture 2 it’s possible to perform all your image editing in the same program as your image storage, and Aperture’s new editing plug-in interface will take that even further. We’ll show you how to make the most of tha.t

Output

Next we’ll teach you the secrets of output. You’ll learn how to use Aperture’s automated presets to send countless files at the push of a button. Whether it’s email or FTP or delivery on a CD or DVD, Aperture can make short work out of exporting your images.

It will also revolutionize your printing, and we’ll show you how to make perfect images every single time using Aperture 2’s amazing print interface and 16-bit color.

Powerful Multimedia with Leopard,  iLife and iWork

The original Aperture Road Tour was one of the first classes in the world to show photographers how to take their Aperture images and use them to create super-powerful presentations, websites, brochures, podcasts and more. We’ll continue on that tradition in our session on integrating Aperture with other parts of Apple’s creative tools and delve into both iWork and iLife integration with Aperture.

This powerful session will show you how to make the most of your images, and how to create stunning content with almost no effort.

Archiving

Finally we’ll cover backup and archiving—the consistently misunderstood and under-practiced part of digital photography that can jeopardize your entire photographic archive if not done correctly.

What Are Classes Like?

Classes are demonstration-style events held at photographic retail facilities as well as hotels and conference centers around the country, and abroad. While it’s a demonstration class, students are encouraged to bring their laptops if they have questions or want to follow along using their own images.

The Aperture Road Tour is an eight-hour day (start times vary from city to city, but generally are 9 a.m.) and are held on weekends. There are several breaks in the day, and a one-hour break for lunch. (Lunch is not provided but all stops are central to areas with food.)
